Day 3 – Lessons started – 上课新体验

Day 3

8am

I woke up, feeling sleepy and wanted to sleep in but I could not do so. Lecture would be starting at 9am. I had no wish in attending. How I wish I am here for only pure vacation and not vacation + study!!!

9am

We were several minutes early for lecture! There was no one else in the room except Dr. Lau, Geena, Jas Min and me. We picked a table and settled down as we waited for the rest to arrive.

9.15am

Lecture started! However, due to some technical problems, the projector could not be used.

My Physiology notes:)

The WHITEBOARD!!!

Thus, Dr. Lau used the WHITEBOARD to give an introduction on physiology and then started on Lecture 1. (I thought it would be BLACKBOARD, the kind that uses chalk, haha J) Anyway, we had a short break at around 10am. Dion, our kind and considerate “mother” went to buy chips and drinks for usJ

Thanks Dion J

Lecture continued and it ended at 11.30am. Before we left for lunch, we took a class photo!

11.45am

Lunch Time! We went to top up our card before proceeding to the canteen. It took us quite some time to order the food as we had no idea what to eat.

The card used to pay for food in the canteen

At last, food was ready and we were back to the table, getting ready to have our first taste of the school canteen food. I ordered 鸡蛋火腿炒拉面 (Egg and Ham Fried Ramen) which cost me only RMB 4.50, which is S$ 0.90. Isn’t it cheap??? Although it was cheap, the plate of fried ramen was oily and the bean sprouts were longer than those found in Singapore.

The leftovers from the 8 of us (Sarah, Yan Fang, Eddy, Hana, Rani, Geena, Jas Min and me): an indication of how bad the food tasted.

We went to Yan Fang’s room to kill the time and exchanged phone numbers.

1.30pm

Back to room 606 for our lecture. Dr. Lau, instead of continuing on physiology, showed us a movie to deepen our knowledge on China’s history. The movie that we watched was Red Cliff 2 (赤壁下) and it took up our afternoon.

Took it before resuming lecture at level 6

3 hours later…

Free and easy for the rest of the day J

We went back to our rooms and did research on the shopping areas which are near the dormitory online.

6pm

We went out to the nearby street (堕落街) to have our dinner. (I have no idea why it is called that.) Anyway, the 7 of us ,Yan Fang, Sarah, Jas Min, Geena, Carol, Dion and me, went into a mini-restaurant for dinner.(I forgot the name.)

Menu

Dinner: 小白菜,红烧鸡块,土豆肉丝,番茄炒蛋 and rice

45 minutes later…

We came out and having our stomachs filled, we went on to buy milk tea and xiao long bao (小笼包). The dinner was great though the 小白菜was slight salty. On the whole, it was not bad. We only paid RMB 6 per person for the dinner J

I was, however, disappointed that there was no pearl in the milk tea due to the ban (not sure if it is temporary or permanent). Despite that, I still bought it at RMB 2. As for xiao long bao (小笼包), it was sold at RMB 3 for 8 pieces. That is very, very CHEAP!!

7.15pm

We were back in our rooms and I had my first taste of China’s version of xiao long bao (小笼包). It tasted great except that it was slightly salty, (Maybe due to the vinegar added?)

Reflections:

It is my first time having lesson in a China’s classroom today. It is definitely different from having lesson in Singapore’s classroom. Just look at the photo of the classroom. Compared to Singapore, there are no speakers, no screen for the projector to project on and no internet connection in the classrooms. However, there is a water dispenser at the front of the classroom, definitely not seen in Singapore. I think that we should have water dispenser in Singapore’s classrooms since the weather in Singapore is always hot and humid. To minimize movements, having water dispenser in classrooms seems like a good idea.

The movie that we watched in the afternoon had deepened my knowledge on China’s history. I have heard of the famous Red Cliff War (赤壁之战) and I was amazed at the war tactics and strategies that Zhu Ge Liang (诸葛亮) and Zhou Yu (周瑜) used to defeat Cao Cao (曹操). The movie version of this war, however, differed slightly from what I have read. The ending whereby Cao Cao (曹操) was not killed was not because Zhou Yu (周瑜) let him go. In fact, it was Guan Yu (关羽) who let him go.

More exciting stories are yet to come:)

Get ready for Day 4 post:)
