Day 4 – Hot Weather - 天气炎热

Day 4

I can hardly believe that today is Friday when I woke up this morning. This means that tomorrow is my first weekend in Wuhan! Tomorrow is free and easy the whole day and I can’t wait for tomorrow to arrive J One of the local students would be taking us out to play and have FUN!!!

8am

I woke up as usual, feeling sleepy and had no wish in leaving my comfortable bed but then I had to attend the OIE lecture, which would start at 9am.

9am

We reached room 701 for the OIE lecture on Doing Business and Investing in China. Just by looking at the name, one could tell that it would be a pretty boring lecture that would induce sleepiness. Due to some problems with the projector, we had a lot of 10-min breaks. The lecturer’s English was not bad, just that she read from the slides! (She failed IS COMISS Module, haha J) Anyway, I paid attention for the first hour before I started to feel sleepy and kind of dozed off for a while. Trying to find something to do that would fight off sleepiness, I started to sketch/draw/doodle on a piece of paper. Apparently, I failed as the drawings turn out to be ugly even though I tried to draw my hamster the best I could. It did not even look like a hamster! Haha J

Jas Min was BORED too:)

During break

wahaha.. My poor drawing of my hamster:)

11.45am

At last, the boring OIE lecture ended and we went to have our lunch at a street that most of us had not been before.

On the way to the street to have lunch

Upon reaching the mini-restaurant that serve halal food, we realized that there was not enough seats for so many of us.

The Halal mini-restaurant

So Eddy, Dion, Carol, Geena, Jas Min and I went to find food to eat. In the end, we ate bread purchased from a cake shop. I bought spicy floss bun (香辣肉松面包) and it was really spicy. It was different from the one sold in BreadTalk in Singapore. In Singapore, only the floss is spicy but over here, the bun and the floss are both spicy. We ate on the way back to the campus but then decided to buy milk tea from the stall that we patronized last night. This time round, I bought the big milk tea that cost RMB 3 which is RMB 1 difference from the small milk tea. We wanted to buy the xiao long bao (小笼包) as well but the stall was closed L As the weather was very hot, we decided to go back to our rooms for the air-con.

1.30pm

Physiology lecture 2: Homeostasis started at room 606, the same one that we used yesterday.

My Homeostasis Notes:)

Dr. Lau showed us a few video clips related to Homeostasis. After about an hour or so, we had a 10-minutes break. See what happen during the break.

Eddy was taking photo

Geena was resting and Jas Min and I were having fun:)

The entire back row was asleep...

Just for fun:)

2 hours later…

Lecture ended! It was early and we went back to our rooms for air-con again and to go online J Geena, Jas Min and I decided to go to the supermarket later to stock up our instant noodles and stuff when the weather will not be that hot.

I got a nasty shock just now when I wanted to boil the water. There was NO WATER from the tap!!! Thank god it only lasted for a while as they were fixing the pipe. I can’t imagine having to go down to collect water for showering, etc. Haha J

6pm

We went to the supermarket and shopped for the stuff that we needed. We spent a total of RMB 72. We then had dinner at MacDonald’s! Of all things to forget, I forgot to bring my camera along L What a blur sotong I was!

Anyway, I ordered Original Hot Plate Chicken Burger Meal (原版烧鸡腿堡套餐). It was great! The fries were not salty and I even think that the fries in Singapore are more salty than the fries here. I also like the drink: Lychee Punch (荔枝麦旋酷), definitely not sold in Singapore. It is the sauces available here that upset me. There is no chilli sauce but hot pepper powder for fries. There is also no curry sauce but American BBQ sauce and Malaysia Satay sauce instead. I actually intended to try the ice-cream but after the meal, I was too full so I didn’t try it but based on what Jas Min said (she tried Dark Chocolate McFlurry), I am glad that I didn’t try it.

8pm

We finally reached the dormitory and I knew why we need to bring our torchlight at last. There are some parts of the campus in complete darkness, as in no lamp is lit and it is scary! Thank god Geena brought hers and we were in a group. Imagine being alone out there (shuddered). I think the local students who passed by us may think that we are crazy, using torchlight and walking as a group, haha J

Junk food stock up:)

Reflections:

What I have learnt from the OIE lecture:

  1. China is the third largest country in the world after Russia and Canada and is divided into 23 provinces and a few autonomous areas.
  2. The difference between Mainland China and People Republic of China (PRC): Mainland China excludes Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau while PRC includes every land/part that belongs to China which includes Taiwan.
  3. Spring Festival is another name for Chinese New Year.
  4. There are many dialects in China, depending on the province. For instance, Wuhan has its own dialect called Wuhan dialect.
  5. China is a developing country and it will be the country that many will want to invest in future as its economy has been growing rapidly for the past decade.

In addition, we really have to look out for the traffic especially during crossing of roads. The cars never slow down even when the drivers saw us crossing from far. I doubt they even stop at red light. One thing that resembles Singapore a lot is the cleanliness! There is hardly any litter on the streets! And the other thing that I hate most since my arrival is the honking of the horn every morning! It irritates me a lot!

Photo of the day:

Can someone tell me if this is an air plane or a hot air balloon? I think it is an air plane... It was taken after our lecture when we were leaving the building...

More exciting stories are yet to come:)

Get ready for Day 5 post:)

30 more days before I return home:)
